DATA PROTECTION & PRIVACY NOTICE

This Privacy Notice explains how Public Broadcasting Services Ltd (“PBS”), as host broadcaster of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Malta (“JESC 2026”), processes personal data submitted as part of the JESC 2026 volunteer application process.

This Notice is issued in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“GDPR”), the Data Protection Act (Chapter 586 of the Laws of Malta)

1. Who is responsible for your personal data?

Public Broadcasting Services Ltd (PBS) is the data controller responsible for your personal data.

2. What personal data do we collect?

Depending on the information you provide, we may collect:

  • your name and contact details;
  • locality and age or age group;
  • language skills;
  • availability and preferred volunteer area;
  • motivation, skills and relevant experience; and
  • limited technical information relating to your application, such as submission date and time and browser timezone.

You should only provide information which is relevant to your application.

3. Why do we use your personal data?

We process your personal data to:

  • receive, assess and administer your volunteer application;
  • communicate with you regarding your application and selection;
  • allocate and coordinate volunteer roles;
  • administer the JESC 2026 volunteer programme;
  • maintain necessary records; and
  • protect the security and integrity of the application process and comply with applicable legal obligations.

4. What is the legal basis for processing?

Depending on the purpose, PBS may process your personal data on the basis of:

  • - [ ] where processing is necessary to take steps at your request in connection with your application;
  • - [ ] where processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation;
  • - [ ] where processing is necessary for PBS's legitimate interests in administering, organising and securing the volunteer programme, provided that these interests are not overridden by your rights and freedoms; and
  • - [ ] where your consent is specifically required and obtained.

Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.

5. Who may access your data?

Your personal data may be accessed by authorised PBS personnel, authorised members of the JESC 2026 event and volunteer teams, and service providers engaged by PBS to operate and administer the application process.

The application and communication process may use Google Workspace services, including Google Sheets, Apps Script and Gmail.
PBS will ensure that appropriate contractual, technical and organisational safeguards are in place when third parties process personal data on its behalf.

6. International transfers

Some service providers may process or access personal data outside Malta or the European Economic Area (“EEA”).
Where this occurs, PBS will ensure that any transfer is carried out in accordance with Chapter V of the GDPR, using an applicable lawful transfer mechanism and appropriate safeguards.

7. How long do we keep your data?

Your personal data will be retained only for as long as necessary for the volunteer selection and administration process, related follow-up and any applicable legal, regulatory or record-keeping requirements.
Once no longer required, personal data will be securely deleted, destroyed or anonymised, as appropriate.

8. Your rights

Subject to the conditions and limitations established by the GDPR and Maltese law, you may have the right to:

  • access your personal data;
  • request correction or deletion;
  • request restriction of processing;
  • object to certain processing;
  • request data portability, where applicable; and
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

9. Children

Where an applicant is a child or otherwise under the applicable age threshold, PBS will apply appropriate safeguards in accordance with the GDPR and Maltese law. Where required, PBS may seek the involvement or authorisation of a parent or legal guardian.

10. Cookies and browser storage

The volunteer website currently uses only essential browser storage to remember your cookie preferences. No analytics, advertising or behavioural-tracking cookies are currently used.

11. Complaints

If you consider that your personal data has not been processed in accordance with applicable data-protection law, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC), Malta's competent data-protection supervisory authority.

12. Important information

This Notice applies specifically to the JESC 2026 volunteer application process.
Submitting an application does not guarantee selection or appointment as a volunteer.
PBS may update this Notice where necessary to reflect changes to the application process, technologies used or applicable legal requirements.
